Ready or Not,
Dawdle Duckling

by Toni Buzzeo
illustrated by Margaret Spengler
Dial Books for Young Readers, 2005.
ISBN: 978-0803729599
In every family there is one dreamer, the one who swims to the sound of his own drummer.  Dawdle is that duckling, always looking for fun, excitement, something new, whether within his imagination or outside in the wide world.  But will he get more than he's bargained for?
On the beach
with the sand castles sparkling,
one Mama Duck plays hide-and-seek.
One, two, three
ducklings disappear.

But the fourth little duckling
finds a friend.
"Hurry, Dawdle Duckling,
hide behind me."

"Quack! Quack! Quack!
says Mama Duck.
"Ready or not, here I come."

Dawdle Duckling
wiggles his feathery tail.
Now, quack, quack, Mama can't find me."

But Mama spots Dawdle's tail.
"Ollie, ollie, in free!"
One, two, three.

"...DAWDLE DUCKLING is up to his old tricks. Scenes of the hero's friends attempting to obscure the hero from his mother's view during hide-and-see will have readers chortling." —Publishers Weekly

"This book, like Dawdle Duckling (Dial, 2003), sports inviting pastels and a vigorous text in an easy-to-read font.  Its ingenuous plot doesn't meander--although its main character does." —School Library Journal

"The intense, sunny pastels match the atmosphere of a jolly day at the beach (complete with the duck family in straw boaters); they also fit Dawdle's bright, goofy, imperturbable spirit." —Booklist
